Kendi has many nicknames and she keeps acquiring more everyday. I know it’s because people love her. She’s so adorable. The following are some of them. Many don’t make sense, but we make it work.
Monkey– the first time Tawi called her this, I asked what was going on and how could Kendi possibly be a monkey. She replied with all the confidence in the world, ‘she’s so busy, like a baby monkey.’ I left it at that, because anyone who knows Tawi, knows that she will say the most absurd things and then proceed to argue to the death in support of them.
Bumble bee– Nadia calls Kendi this all the time. I should definitely ask her what it means one day. It might actually have something to do with Kendi being so round. I don’t know.
Monster– Wam and Dadi were babysitting one day while I was getting treatment at Aunty Bulu’s spa. At one point, Kendi was whining and whinging and I wanted to check on her. So I asked her to call Wam in to bring the baby. She yells out, ‘Wam, please bring the monster’ I don’t know, I just don’t know.
Princess Warrior– Mich always greets Kendi the same way, ‘ng’ama en princess warrior na?’ (who is my princess warrior?). I love it so much, it’s perfect. I can just see her first costume now.
Sunshine– Kendi has been hearing her father sing, ‘you are my sunshine’ to her all her life. Whenever she’s upset, not feeling like herself and just generally under the weather, he picks her up, cuddles her and sings,’ you are my sunshine, my only sunshine, you make me happy, when skies are grey. You never know Kend, how much I love you. So please don’t take, my sunshine away’.
She adores it. She always smiles. I always smile.
